If one is in Antigua and would like an exciting two day adventure to explore another treasure of Guatemala, namely Lake Atitlan, Atitlan Tours has a package that will suit your need.

This tour departs from your hotel in Antigua.  You will be picked up at 8:00 in the morning to make the direct 21/2 hour drive to the beauty and charm of Lake Atitlan. Upon arriving at the lake we will take a scenic boat ride across Lake Atitlan to visit Santiago Atitlan & San Juan La Laguna, two ancient Mayan villages.   The first village we will visit is San Juan la Laguna where you will experience Art galleries featuring local painters and craftsman.  These galleries are very low key and there is no pressure to buy.  Next we will visit a medicinal herbal plantation where the local healers grow the plants and herbs used by the Mayans for centuries.   The thing San Juan is really known for is their natural dye textiles.   We will have a firsthand demonstration of this technique and see the fabulous creations that result from it.   San Juan is a village where you will enjoy learning about the spiritualism, beliefs and creations of the Tzutujiles Mayan people.

Later, our boat will transfer us to the south shores of Lake Atitlan in order to visit the hidden village of Santiago Atitlan.   Santiago is also a Tzutujil village and is the largest on Lake Atitlan.  For centuries Santiago was the dominant village among the Maya.  There we will walk along one of the most artistic streets of Lake Atitlan and Guatemala.  Many galleries are located there where indigenous artists show their paintings, sculptures on wood, as well as many other creative objects.  Again, there is no pressure to buy.   It is a great cultural experience and gets you involved with the community through meeting the people and experiencing there living environment.   Your guide has many friends and acquaintances in these villages and it makes for a much more authentic experience.

After a wonderful dinner in one of the greatest restaurants in Santa Cruz la Laguna, on the north shore of Lake Atitlan, we will spend the night in some great lakefront cabins.   The next morning you get up to enjoy a beautiful Lake Atitlan sunrise.  We will then start a non strenuous hike to one of the Mayan Kaqchikel villages.  Here we will explore the differences between the Kaqchikeles and Tzutujiles Mayans.  Upon leaving the village we will again take our transportation back to your hotel in Antigua.

As with all tours offered by Atitlan Tours, we can customize the tour to fit your desires.  Only a limited number of people will be included in each tour.
